Some of you may recall me posting in the past about my involvement with the production of a documentary entitled "TRUE BELIEVER: The Stan Lee Documentary." Well, it's been a long post-production process, and I hadn't heard much of anything from the producer, Nikki Frakes, but she contacted me again today and updated me on the film's status.

First is the change of the film's title. It is now called "With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story." The film has been scored, and a final cut put together. The distribution rights is still being hammered out, but there will be a showing of the film this year at the San Diego Comicon.

Here is a press release that Ms. Frakes told me I could pass along:

"With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story" is a feature length documentary on Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee! Lee is the co-creator of Spider-Man, Iron Man, X-Men, Hulk and over 500 other comic book characters. We invite you to join us to learn how Lee rose from his humble Brooklyn beginnings to co-creating many of the world’s most well known characters.

My BEATLES History!

Today would have been George Harrison's 67th birthday (as a sidenote, my father shared this birthday with the "quiet" Beatle, but he was a year older). In memory of the occasion, I thought I would share some of my Beatles-related videos in this blog, as well as telling all of you a little bit about my history with the band's music.

According to Mark Lewisohn's "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions" book, I was born on the same day the Beatles recorded "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." Now, I know that John Lennon and George Harrison didn't particulary care for this somewhat silly little Paul McCartney number, but I have always loved novelty music, and I always liked this song. And finding out that this song was recorded on my actual birthday only increased my fondness for it. Despite that I had always enjoyed that song in particular, and the Beatles's music which I had heard all my life on the radio, I really wasn't a fan, per se, until I read another book that mentioned the Beatles, albeit not as the prmary focus of that book.

The book was "Big Secrets," written by William Poundstone. This book sought to explore and in many instances expose the secrets and truths behind many tales from urban folklore and other mysteries. The book had a section that dealt with the backmasking on rock and roll records. As a teen-ager, I was fascinated with such stuff, and in truth that fascination continues to this day.

Backmasking, also known as reverse-recording is a recording technique in which audio is recorded backwards, supposedly to place a subliminal message for the listeners. Now, even as the youngster I was, I was savvy enough to realize that any such tomfoolery was done either for fun or to get people to buy an album, or both. I never believed that listening to any messages would cause me to commit atrocities, or worship any demons, or go crazy, or any other such nonsense. But the whole notion that there might be some hidden messages on albums got me very interested in seeking out the albums mentioned in "Big Secrets." In particular, the albums of the Beatles grabbed my attention, as not only were they among the first to have employed such techniques (The song "Rain" for instance, features backwards guitar, but no messages), but there was this whole story built around why the group was placing hidden messages on their records.

According to the story, we were asked to believe that Paul McCartney met an untimely death in 1966, and that his death had been kept from the public. The remaining Beatles, seeking to get the real word out, placed numerous audio and visual clues on their albums and the album cover artwork.

Here is a video that I made in 2003 in which I discussed this myth and the clues attributed to it:

Now, I never for a minute believed that Paul McCartney died in a car crash in his Twenties. But, I just had to hear these so-called clues for myself. I went out and bought "The Magical Mystery" tour first, on cassette tape. I chose that one because it was said to have had a great number of the clues, and the songs I was familiar with at that time from that album were songs I enjoyed. From there, I eventually picked up all the albums (all on cassette tapes) that were said to have clues on them. In the process, I heard many songs that never seemed to receive airplay on the radio stations in my city during that period. Many songs which I found I liked quite a bit more than what the tracks that the radio stations chose to share with us listeners. Soon after this, I just had to get all the Beatles music, whether they were part of this "Paul Is Dead" myth or not. And that is why I credit the rumor/hoax/myth with making The Beatles my favorite band of all-time.

Over the years, I upgraded my cassettes to CD, and I owned every officially released album of their music in CD form, and some not so officially released, too. I have yet to take the plunge and get the recent remastered sets, though. Because I am such a fan, it is one of the few times I would buy a set of music I all ready owned just to hear it in remastered quality, but the price I have to pay is hard to justify for me spending the money at this time.

About two years ago, a good friend of mine scored me a bunch of vinyl records from The Beatles, mostly foreign pressings, which he came across at a local Goodwill store. I relate the story in the following video:

I had all ready owned some of the albums on vinyl before this, but never so many, and in such good shape, and from other countries.

There is talk that film director Robert Zemeckis will be making a computer animated movie remake of "The Yellow Submarine." That is pretty exciting to me, as I thought the computer animated Beatles from the Rock Band game released last year was very cool-looking. In fact, though I don't own the game system required to play that game, and I am not any good at playing such games anyway, I was tempted to grab a copy just to watch the animated video footage should I ultimately buy the game system.

On my public access television program, "The Happy Show!," I will sometimes find a way to slip something Beatles-related into the show. When Ringo Starr made a video telling people to stop sending him fan mail, I affectionately spoofed him in an episode of my show:

The Beatles have been and will continue to be an influence on my show, my artwork, and my music listening. There's just something about that group, their music, their lives, their look and style, and the way they truly revolutionized modern music. Even those that don't enjoy their music cannot seriously deny the huge impact that the Beatles have had and continue to have on our culture.

The MGM Produced "Our Gang" films are a decidely mixed bag of goods. On the one hand, you have the classic characters most everyone knows and loves from the Gang (also known as "The Little Rascals"), including Spanky, Alfalfa, Darla, Butch, Buckwheat, and Froggy. But, the period following the years when Hal Roach Studios produced the series (1922 through 1938) was sometimes too cutsie, corny, melodramatic, and worst of all, preachy.

Hal Roach knew that everybody was going to the movies to watch the shorts (this is before TV, of course), and during his years the series was geared toward entertaining an all-ages audience. Some of that does carry over into the MGM years (1938 - 1944) that are represented in this set, but the series started being geared mostly towards the younger set only, and then more concentrated on teaching lessons than making kids laugh.

Still, despite the lessons, the preaching, and the like, there is some good, solid, and fun shorts during these years. And any real fan of "Our Gang" will undoubtedly want to own this set to complete their collection.

The description for the set on this site lets the would-be purchaser know that the films are not remastered, but come from master prints. The video quality is fine enough for me, and I believe the average viewer will be happy enough with it, too.

I gave the set a rating of four stars because I think the overall series is entertaining and that most people will still find the shorts enjoyable. With a collection of individual shorts from a period that spans many years, there will always a few bad ones in the bunch, but don't let that keep you from picking up the set. I am happy that WB released the series at all, and I want other fans to support that decision, too.

Wolverine + The Hulk = THE WULK!

Hi gang!

A discussion came up over at www.byrnerobotics.com, the message board and website for comic book legend John Byrne, about knock-off characters at Marvel Comics. For instance, there is now a character named Rulk, which is a red Hulk, and Wolverine has a female clone named X-23, and a son with claws named Daken.

With that in mind, some people posting to the board there decided to imagine what would happen if Wolverine was mixed with the Hulk. They named him WULK. I created a picture of what I thought he would look like, which can be seen at the following web address:

In Memory of Rick Anderson.

I don't know how many of you on from the Evansville area knew or met Rick Anderson, a local comic book collector, but I just discovered tonight that he passed away April 25, 2009, at age 52 at his home. He worked as an architect for Hafer & Associates of Evansville.

Rick had been a loyal, regular customer at my shop for well over a decade, and he also frequented the other shops in town. So regular was he that I became concerned when I hadn't seen or heard from him for several weeks. Though I didn't want to think it, I had a hunch to check the obituaries in the Evansville Courier and Press, and my worst suspicion was confirmed.

Rick always stopped by nearly every week to pick up his comics and talk about comics and movies with me. He was always a pleasant and very friendly man. I will miss him not only as a customer, but as a friend.

May he rest in peace.

Memorial Day and New Comic Day!

Hi gang!

Next Monday, May 25th, is Memorial Day and because of that fact the new comics shipment will be bumped from Wednesday to Thursday that week. The shop is normally closed on Mondays, so there won't be any changes as far as the shop's hours that week.

On a related note, I finished restocking the dollar boxes at the shops. There are many new and different titles to go after, so stock up for your Summer reading! Yayy!!!

THE STAN LEE DOCUMENTARY & ME!

Hi gang!

As some of you already know, I have been involved with the TRUE BELIEVER documentary being made about STAN LEE.

For those that don't know, the scoop is this: Over a year ago I took the old 1960's Marvel Bullpen fan club audio recording and added images and such to the audio and placed the video I made on YouTube:

I was contacted by a representative form STAN LEE's company POW ENTERTAINMENT (http://www.powentertainment.com/) who told me that Stan saw my video and enjoyed it, and he inquired about the photographs I used in making the video. I asked if Stan would like to have the photos I had sent to him, and he did. I sent him the photos I had saved and a week or so later STAN LEE sent me a way-cool personalized autographed photo of him and Spider-Man!

Flash foward a few months later, a producer for the documentary TRUE BELIEVER contacted me about using the video footage I made in the documentary. The producers of the documentary are working directky with STAN LEE and it is my understanding that Stan told them about my video, himself. Also, because the producer I spoke with was aware I am a comic book retailer, she asked if I would also be willing to contribute scans and such for use in making the documentary. I agreed to do so, and was even given charge of running the official MySpace page for the documentary.

Which brings me to the next bit of business...

The INFAMOUS "ARCHIE ANDREWS... DEAD" PARODY RETURNS!

Hi!

Months ago, I posted a video parody of death in the comic book industry being used as a sales gimmick. This video featured a mock story about Archie Andrews of "Archie" comics dying. It was simply titled "Archie Andrews... Dead."

The day before Thanksgiving, I received notice from YouTube that Archie Comic Publishers, Inc. had my video removed from the site claiming copyright infringement, even though the video was clearly marked a parody and there was a notice of copyright given for Archie Comics.

I filed a counter complaint and demanded my video be reinstated, and asserting it was a parody and a satire.

Today, I was contacted by Archie Comic Publications Incorporated's legal representative and a compromise was reached.

YouTube has reinstated my video, and there will be no mark against my account. I will be removing the present videos on my own, voluntarily. I will then add segments to the beginning and ending of the video parody/satire I created that will make it clear that it is a parody and a satire, and that Archie Comic Publications Incorporated would never resort to killing any of its characters for a marketing gimmick.

I feel that the request is very fair, and my parody will still be allowed on YouTube, intact, but with the amendments I mentioned. Below is a link to the new video with the new introduction:

I was recently alerted by YouTube that a video I made was removed due to a third-party notification by Archie Comic Publications, Inc. claiming that this my video parody "Archie Andrews... Dead" is infringing on copyright.

Again, this video is a PARODY, and that should be apparent to anyone with common sense. It is a comment on how the comic book publishers use death as a cheap marketing ploy. I chose Archie precisely because most sensible people would realize that such a tactic by Archie Comics is absurd. The "tags" for the video even had the video clearly marked as being a parody.

Is DARK HORSE ripping off LIVING WITH ZOMBIES?

Two people I know, who both have frequented my shop, Comics Unlimited, are the creators of a comic book series named “Living With Zombies,” which features me as a character. “Living With Zombies” is a comedy-horror series about the continuing exploits of two slacker pals who one day find that the world around them has become overrun by zombies.

The series was created by Matthew C. Billman and Christopher Herndon in 2003 as a web comic. The series was later published in 2004 by Frightworld Studios, and later by Goathead Publishing. There have been seven issues published, and a trade paperback was published in 2007 collecting all the issues up to date.

“Wizard” magazine has twice mentioned the series, once in an article about zombie comics where it was given a full page write-up, and later in an article about the top 40 Independent comics that “Wizard” suggested its readers should be reading.

The reason I bring all of this up is that there is a series being published by Dark Horse Comics, created by Dark Horse owner Mike Richardson. This series features stories about the continuing exploits of two slacker pals who one day find that the world around them has become overrun by zombies.

Sound familiar?

It is titled “Living With The Dead.”

What is particularly interesting is that Matthew Billman was contacted by Dark Horse Associated Editor, Mike Carriglitto over a year before “Living With The Dead” was published. Carriglitto told Billman that he wanted to discuss the possibility of Dark Horse Comics publishing "Living with Zombies.“ Billman gave Mike a synopsis of what the title was going be like in future issues. Billman never heard back from Carriglitto or Dark Horse.

The two comics share exactly the same premise, and very similar titles. On the Comic Book Resources website, in the "Lying In The Gutters" column, Mike Richardson explains, "...My only exposure to ("Living With Zombies") came when I was approached by one of my editors some time back about a possible resemblance to an on-line comic he was interested in publishing in comic form. Because of the possible similarities, I passed on the project and purposely have not EVER looked at it."

While Richardson denies taking anything from "Living With Zombies," I find it odd that Dark Horse would purposefully publish a series that, again, shares the same exact premise, with very similar titles. It's not just a zombie comic. It is a humor-driven zombie comic about two slacker buddies having the time of their lives fighting zombie hordes.

This part of Mike Richardson's description for "Living With The Dead" would exactly match any description for "Living With Zombies":

"...It seemed that if two buddies survived, they could make lemonade out of the lemon they were handed. First...

....Their success at blending in allows them build their own paradise. The best of friends."

The only differences is the eventual addition of a love interest, and the two main characters dressing up as zombies.

As noted, above, I am featured as a regular character in the series by Billman and Herndon. I mention this in the interest of full disclosure. While it can be leveled that I have some bias as a result, I do not have any financial stake in the series. I do feel that Billman and Herndon are being wronged, based on what I know, and that this needs to be brought to the attention of the comics industry.

There's also the Todd McFarlane issue of "The Incredible Hulk" #340 that features a fight between the Hulk and Wolverine from the X-Men, and a copy of "Uncanny X-Men" #141 with the classic story "Days of Future Past" by Chris Claremont and John Byrne!

Frankly, I am not one to get overly personal on the internet. I share details about my business and about my love of comics and art, and my mostly silly public access tv show. But, I am not usually one to discuss truly personal matters online with others who I have never met. I rarely discuss such things even with people I do know, except close friends and family members.

My father passed away on October 6, 2007.

It is because I want people to know that he was a great and loving father that I am even posting about this to begin with. I made a video tribute in his memory:

BBC "Panorama" Update!

The episode of BBC-1's "Panorama" that has a brief interview with Matt Hawes and Happy the puppet from "The Happy Show!" has been postponed because "Panorama" ran a more timely episode in the spot. THE SCOOP:

Almost two months ago, the BBC-1 program named "Panorama" sent out its' reporter, John Sweeney, to investigate the Church of Scientology. During the course of his investigation, Sweeney lost his temper and went on a rant against members of that church that was soon distributed by video on the Web. It made headline news around the world.

I thought that it was just insane how this investigative journalist could blow his cool like that and on camera, no less. I couldn't resist spoofing Sweeney in a video for "The Happy Show!," my public access comedy-variety program. Here is a link to that spoof:

Not long after my video was available for viewing on the Net, I was contacted by a staff member from "Panorama" named Pervez Khan. Mr. Khan explained that "Panorama" was doing a follow-up on the media story surrounding Sweeney's outburst, and asked if I'd like to be interviewed for the show. I agreed, and filmed a short video in which I answer a few questions sent to me by Khan and submitted it to the program.

That episode that I was interviewed for is scheduled to air on July 9, 2007. Coincidentally, that date is my birthday!

PETITION TO GIVE PARIS HILTON MORE JAIL TIME!

Paris Whitney Hilton is an American tradgedy and spoiled heiress. She provides a horrible example for young people all over the U.S. and the world. She is the embodiment of all that represents the worst of the cult of celebrity. She is famous simply because of her family's wealth and believes that she should be above the law because of her fame and fortune.

Hilton is notable for projecting her image as a spolied socialite on the FOX reality series "The Simple Life." In addition to her work as an actress, she has achieved some infamy for a well-known sex video that has circulated on the internet.

As most of America now knows, Ms. Hilton was just charged in a Los Angeles court with DUI and sentenced to 45 days in Century Regional Detention Facility in California beginning on or before June 5, 2007.

We, the American public who reject Paris and her lifestyle and the negative impact she has on the youth of America (and, indeed, the world) are shocked, dismayed and appalled by how Paris has tried to use her celebrity to get out of paying her debt to society. Drunk Driving is wrong! We do not support drunk driving! Paris should go to jail!

As depicted on on Headline News (May 4, 2007), countless celebrities have been slapped on the wrist for similar incidents recently. Nick Nolte, Mel Gibson, Tracy Morgan, Wynonna Judd, to name a few, were arrested and never did a day in jail after their initial arrests for drunk driving /DUI /DWI charges. Rappers Busta Rhymes and Eve still walk free after both being arrested for the same charges as Ms. Hilton just this past week. Brandy's California Highway accident, although no proof of DUI was evidenced in her accident, resulting in the death of a young wife and mother in California, yet Brandy walks free as of today, never doing any time and A WOMAN HAS BEEN KILLED most likely due to her reckless driving!

We need to see that, for once, the law will not let a celebrity escape justice! Paris Hilton must be made to pay for her crimes, as those other celebrities should have been made to pay for their crimes!

This petition is to ask Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to give Paris Hilton more time in the slammer for her mistake!

WE NEED MORE SUPPORT to keep Paris off the streets and set an example for everyone that being young, pretty, rich and famous does not make you above the law! STAN LEE of MARVEL COMICS WATCHES "THE HAPPY SHOW!"!!

Hi gang!

VERY COOL! STAN LEE, legendary co-creator of such iconic comic book and pop-culture icons, SPIDER-MAN, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, and THE FANTASTIC FOUR, has watched one of my videos from "The HAPPY SHOW!"

I was contacted by a person working for STAN LEE at POW! ENTERTAINMENT, Stan's company, who told me Stan really enjoyed the video and wanted to know where I got the pictures used in the video. The video features many vintage photos of the original production staff (known affectionately as "The Marvel Bullpen") from the 1960s. I gathered the photos from various sites on the 'Net, and some with the help of some great people on the JOHN BYRNE FORUM (www.byrnerobotics.com), who came to bat when I explained which photos I was looking for.

Stan says he is always having people ask him if he has any photos of the old gang at Marvel, and that's why his people contacted me. I sent Stan all the copies I had saved, including many I did not use for my video. In return, Stan signed and personalized a photograph of him and Spider-Man for me!! Yay!!

Hi gang!

I put up a few items on eBay. There's the rare variant cover to "Ultimate Spider-Man" #104 (One out of a hundred copies had this cover), and a "Civil War" #7 variant, as well as a John Wayne comic, a Three Stooges comic, a special comic produced by Marvel Comics for the military, and two different pieces of original artwork by your's truly. Both pieces of art are pictures of Spawn. One is my first attempt at the character from 1994, and the second is my second attempt many years later (I feel so old) in 2007, as a "Quick Draw" for my public access program, "The Happy Show!"

Matt Hawes/The Happy Show! mentioned in Business Week Viacom article!

You may recall that I sent out links to my videos on YouTube where I talked about the situation where the media giant, VIACOM, had YouTube removed over 100,000 videos claiming that the videos infringed on copyrights the corporation owned.

You may also recall that I fought the removal of my video, which was caught up in the sweep. My video was a parody of reality television and did not infringe on any copyrights. I wrote to Viacom, YouTube, and even the Associated Press, protesting the action by Viacom and YouTube. I was contacted days later by MTV's legal department (MTV is one of Viacom's many cable networks), and they had reviewed my video and found that it was taken down in error. The video was put back up, and the strike I had received against my YouTube account was removed.

Well, I was contacted by Catherine Holahan of "Business Week" for an interview for an article for their website. I granted the interview and it was put up today. Here is the link to that interview (please let me know if it doesn;t work):
